How to Calculate What You Need on Your Final Exam

Preparing for finals week can be stressful, but knowing your exact target score allows you to study strategically and allocate time where it matters most.

Your final course grade is composed of two components: the points you have already secured in the course, and the percentage points contributed by the final exam.

The Final Exam Formula

Required Exam Score = [Target Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Weight))] ÷ Weight

Step-by-Step Example:

Suppose you currently hold an 84% in your chemistry class, your goal is to finish with a 90% (A), and the final exam represents 20% (0.20) of your total semester grade.

  • Current Work Value: 84 × (1 - 0.20) = 84 × 0.80 = 67.2 points
  • Points Remaining to Goal: 90 - 67.2 = 22.8 points
  • Required Exam Score: 22.8 ÷ 0.20 = 114%

In this scenario, earning a 90% in the course requires a 114% on the final exam (meaning extra credit is needed). However, if your target is an 80% (B), you would only need a 64% on the final exam.
